al-ʿAnkabūt 29:9

The Qurʾān · Sūra 29: al-ʿAnkabūt · verse 9

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

29/9

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَنُدْخِلَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

"Those who believe and do righteous deeds — We shall surely admit them among the righteous."

The construction of the sentence is worth recording: the verse does not say "We shall put them into the Garden" — it says fi'ṣ-ṣāliḥīn, that is, We shall admit them into a company.

I record this as my own reading, and its ground is the preposition (): the recompense is given not as a place but as a belonging. And this must be read together with the preceding verse of the sūra: there it was said that parents are not to be obeyed where they exert such pressure — that is, where one bond breaks, admission into another bond is announced.

The same root occurs twice: ʿamilu'ṣ-ṣāliḥāt (the deed) and al-ṣāliḥīn (the persons). The work done and the company joined are named by the same word.
