The Qurʾān · Sūra 26: al-Shuʿarāʾ · verses 123-127

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

26/123-127

Kadhdhabat ʿĀdun'il-mursalīn · Idh qāla lahum akhūhum Hūdun alā tattaqūn · Innī lakum rasūlun amīn · Fa'ttaqū'llāha wa aṭīʿūn · Wa mā asʾalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin; in ajriya illā ʿalā rabbi'l-ʿālamīn

"ʿĀd too denied the messengers. · When their brother Hūd said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? · I am a trustworthy messenger sent to you. · So guard yourselves against God and obey me. · I ask you no wage for it; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all the worlds.'"

The shared frame — tabulated above

All five of the five verses are the shared mould of the sūra; the word analyses were made in the introductory section on 26/105-191 and are not repeated.

The only difference from the account of Noah is the name of those addressed: ʿĀd in place of qawmu Nūḥ, Hūd in place of Nūḥ.

عَاد and the place of the people of Hūd

ʿĀd is one of the two peoples the Qurʾān names as belonging to the Arabian peninsula (the other is Thamūd). The Qurʾān associates them with the region of al-Aḥqāf (al-Aḥqāf 46/21 — treated in al-Aḥqāf) and names Iram (al-Fajr 89/6-8 — treated in al-Fajr).

What was recorded in al-Fajr holds here too and I do not repeat it: Sūrat al-Fajr names ʿĀd as irama dhāti'l-ʿimād ("Iram of the pillars") and says allatī lam yukhlaq mithluhā fi'l-bilād ("the like of which was not created in the lands").

And the ʿĀd section of al-Shuʿarāʾ treats exactly this: buildings. The hundred and twenty-eighth and hundred and twenty-ninth verses are the counterpart of the note about ʿimād ("pillars") in al-Fajr. This is an overlap that can be verified from the text.

And the manner of ʿĀd's destruction (the wind) was treated at al-Qamar 54/18-21 and at al-Ḥāqqa 69/6-8. Al-Shuʿarāʾ does not say the manner of the destruction — it says only fa-ahlaknāhum (139). This is a difference that can be verified from the text.
