2/267-268 — "Do not pick out the bad"
"Spend of the good things you have earned and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth. Do not set about giving away the bad things that you yourselves would not take except with your eyes shut."
The measure is tied to the addressee's own reaction: wa lastum bi-ākhidhīhi illā an tughmiḍū fīh — "and you would take it only with your eyes shut."
إغماض — to shut the eye, to overlook. The verse, that is, gives no list; it makes the person's own threshold of acceptance the measure.
ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ يَعِدُكُمُ ٱلْفَقْرَ وَيَأْمُرُكُم بِٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱللَّهُ يَعِدُكُم مَّغْفِرَةً مِّنْهُ وَفَضْلًا — two promises are set against one another:
Note: the other side too is named with the verb "to promise" (yaʿidukum). Fear, that is, is described as a promise — a word about the future. Both speak of the future; the verse sets the two side by side with the same verb and makes the choice visible.
