2/163-164 — Eight signs
"Your God is one God… In the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the ships that sail the sea carrying what profits people, in the water God sends down from the sky… there are signs for a people who use their reason."
The claim of tawḥīd is set out and immediately afterwards the proof is enumerated. The common feature of the eight things listed is striking: all of them are ordinary.
The sky, day and night, the ship, rain, plants, animals, the wind, the cloud. None of them is extraordinary; they are things seen every day. The verse does not offer a miracle as proof — it offers the familiar.
The logic of this is: habit stops seeing. A person who sees a thing every day no longer notices it; the extraordinary, on the other hand, draws attention but is not repeated. The Qurʾān insistently points not to the second but to the first — because the real issue is not seeing something new but being able to look at what is seen.
لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ — "for a people who use their reason". At verse 44 we saw that the root ʿaql means "to bind". The use here completes that sense: the signs stand before everyone; they become signs for the one who can bind them to one another.
