Wa alqaw ila'llāhi yawmaʾidhini'l-salama wa ḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūn · Alladhīna kafarū wa ṣaddū ʿan sabīli'llāhi zidnāhum ʿadhāban fawqa'l-ʿadhābi bimā kānū yufsidūn
"On that day they will offer their surrender to God, and what they used to invent will be lost to them. · Those who disbelieved and turned others from the way of God — We shall add punishment upon punishment for the corruption they wrought."
The same expression occurred in the twenty-eighth verse: fa-alqawu'l-salam. In the eighty-seventh a word is added: ila'llāh.
| Verse | Expression | To whom the surrender |
|---|---|---|
| 28 | Fa-alqawu'l-salam | Not specified — a defence follows it |
| 87 | Wa alqaw ila'llāhi yawmaʾidhini'l-salam | To God — no defence |
This is a repetition verifiable within the sūra. And I record this as my own reading, its ground being the added word: in the twenty-eighth verse a denial followed the surrender (mā kunnā naʿmalu min sūʾ). In the eighty-seventh none follows. The scene shows the same act in its completed form.
The sentence had enumerated two acts — kafarū and ṣaddū — but as its ground it gives a third word: ifsād.
I give this as an observation: the added punishment is tied not to the denial itself but to the side of it that touches another. Ṣaddū ʿan sabīli'llāh — "to turn others from the way of God" — is already an act that concerns someone else. And the word ifsād names it.
The same distinction was made in the twenty-fifth verse (wa min awzāri'lladhīna yuḍillūnahum): a man's own burden and the burden of leading astray were enumerated separately. This is a repetition verifiable within the sūra.
