77/45

وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

The eighth refrain. And after the tableau of the Garden.

The function of this placement was taken up above under the heading "The function of the repetition"; I do not repeat it. In brief: the refrain's being placed here suggests that the tableau of the Garden is not an independent section but is set up to show what the addressee is losing.

One further detail: verse 44 ends with al-muḥsinīn, verse 45 with al-mukadhdhibīn. The two verse-endings are in the same sound (-īn) and the two words are in the same position. Sound puts the two groups side by side; meaning separates them.

And this is the very operation from which the sūra's name is taken: yawm al-faṣl.
