"Say: 'I do not say to you that the treasuries of God are with me, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say to you that I am an angel. I follow only what is revealed to me.'"
The sentence rejects three claims, and all three were things the other side demanded at al-Furqān 25/7-8:
| What is denied | The demand in al-Furqān |
|---|---|
| ʿIndī khazāʾinu'llāh | Law lā ulqiya ilayhi kanzun (25/8) |
| Aʿlamu'l-ghayb | — |
| Innī malak | Law lā unzila ilayhi malakun (25/7) |
What is seen when the two sūras are compared is this, and I record it as my own reading: in al-Furqān these things were demanded; in al-Anʿām it is said that they were never claimed at all. That is, instead of meeting the demand, the answer states that the claim was never made.
إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ — the same sentence was treated at al-Aḥqāf 46/9 and Yūnus 10/15. I rely on that treatment.
