al-Anʿām 6:38

"There is no creature moving on the earth, and no bird flying with its two wings, but that they are communities like you. We have left nothing out in the Book."

أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم — "communities like you."

I record this as an observation: the verse names living beings not as individual creatures but as communities — and with the same word used for the human community (umam).

The word dābba was analysed at al-Jāthiya 45/4 (a living thing that moves). And the redundancy in the expression ṭāʾirin yaṭīru bi-janāḥayh is worth recording: "a bird flying with its two wings" — how the flying is done is stated separately. The lexicographers explain expressions of this kind as bringing the depiction before the eye.

مَّا فَرَّطْنَا فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ مِن شَىْءٍ — "We have left nothing out in the Book."

There is disagreement in the classical works of tafsīr over what is meant by al-kitāb:

Both readings are transmitted; I do not impose a preference. A note, per the method (Method): I draw from this verse no conclusion such as "the Qurʾān contains all the sciences"; a claim of that kind does not follow necessarily from the wording of the verse, and the disagreement must not be concealed.
