al-Anʿām 6:145-147

The Qurʾān · Sūra 6: al-Anʿām · verses 145-147

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

6/145-147

"Say: 'In what has been revealed to me I do not find anything forbidden to one who eats, except carrion, or blood poured out, or the flesh of swine…'"

The construction of the sentence must be recorded, and I give this as my own reading: the verse does not say "these things are forbidden" — it says lā ajidu fīmā ūḥiya ilayya muḥarraman — "in what has been revealed to me I do not find".

That is, the ruling is given not as the proclamation of a list but as a search of the text in hand. And this coincides exactly with the backbone of the sūra: in verse 150 it will be said hātū shuhadāʾakumthe support for the prohibition will be asked for.

The qualification إِلَّا مَا ٱضْطُرِرْتُمْ إِلَيْهِ had occurred in the 119th verse of this sūra as well. And it was treated at al-Baqara 2/173.

(146) — A note, per the method (Method): the verse states a particular ruling laid upon a particular community, and its ground; it issues no blanket ruling about a group. Indeed the ground is tied to an act: bi-baghyihim.

The root baghy was treated at al-Shūrā 42/14 and al-Ḥujurāt 49/9.

(147) — and the block closes, in the face of their crying lies, with a reminder of mercy. This is on the same line as kataba ʿalā nafsihi'r-raḥma in verses 12 and 54 of the sūra.
