46/29-32 — The listening of the jinn

"And when We turned towards you a company of the jinn, to listen to the Qurʾān. When they came to it they said, 'be silent'. And when it was finished they returned to their people as warners."

The scene of listening

The scene is built with five verbs, and the order of the verbs is worth recording:

OrderVerbWhat
1ṢarafnāThey were turned
2AnṣitūThey fell silent — saying it to one another
3QuḍiyaIt was finished
4Wallaw … mundhirīnThey returned — as warners
5Qālū yā qawmanāThey told

Between hearing and turning back to tell there is no stage at all. I record this as my own reading, and its support is that the verbs are linked one after another with fāʾ and wāw: in the first block of the sūra there were those who demanded evidence and put it off for months; here the matter is settled in a single listening.

And the contrast looks deliberate in the structure of the sūra: in the tenth verse one person from the Children of Israel bore witness, and those facing him grew proud. In the twenty-ninth verse a company that is not seen turns back the moment it hears.

إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا كِتَٰبًا أُنزِلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مُوسَىٰ مُصَدِّقًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ

"We have listened to a Book sent down after Moses, confirming what came before it."

The sentence of the jinn is the third answer given to the demand in the fourth verse of the sūra: there it had been said, "bring a support from an earlier Book". Here those who listen define what they have listened to by relating it to the earlier Book.

And inside the definition there is a chain: after Moses, confirming what came before. It says the same thing as the expression mā kuntu bidʿan mina'r-rusul (I am not an unprecedented one) in the ninth verse — the one from the mouth of the Prophet, the other from the mouths of those who listened.

يَٰقَوْمَنَآ أَجِيبُوا۟ دَاعِىَ ٱللَّهِ — the call is not "believe us": "answer the caller of God." They do not place themselves in between.

The detailed analysis of the subject of the jinn was made in al-Jinn — the root sense of the word (ج-ن-ن: to cover, to conceal), invisibility, and the limit of certain knowledge about these beings were treated there. I do not repeat it here, and I keep the same limit: no description is produced beyond what the text states.
