The section between the two verses (35-45) is the sūra's section of light and of the universe. The sūra, that is, opens that section with a sentence and closes it with the same sentence.
I record this as an observation about the word order; the wording of the two verses stands in the text and can be compared.
And the difference is worth noting: the thirty-fourth verse has ilaykum (to you), the forty-sixth does not. And in the thirty-fourth three things were enumerated (āyāt, mathal, mawʿiẓa); here only one.
| Verse | Expression | Particle |
|---|---|---|
| 35 | yahdi'llāhu li-nūrihī man yashāʾ | lām |
| 46 | wa'llāhu yahdī man yashāʾu ilā ṣirāṭin mustaqīm | ilā |
And reading the two objects together says something, which I record as my own reading: light is not the road itself — it is what makes the road visible. The sūra names the two separately.
صِرَاط — root ص-ر-ط. The word was analysed in detail in the al-Fātiḥa section; I do not repeat it here.
And that the word occurs only once in the sūra is worth noting: although the sūra is a text of rulings and of manners, it uses the word "road" once — and that at the close.
