2/91 — "We believe in what was sent down to us"
"When they are told 'believe in what God has sent down', they say, 'we believe in what was sent down to us', and they reject what is beyond it — though it is the truth confirming what is with them."
The structure of the sentence is striking: faith is professed, but the object of the faith is defined not as a truth but as a possession — "what was sent down to us". The measure is not whether the word is true but whose it is.
And the verse shows that this stance contradicts itself: what they reject is the thing that confirms what they accept. Someone who rejects what corroborates his own book is attached not to his book but to his ownership of it.
The answer targets this contradiction too: "Then why did you kill God's prophets before — if you were believers?" It is recalled that the inheritance claimed in word was not kept in deed.
