al-Baqara 2:144 — "We see your face turning about towards the sky"

The Qurʾān · Sūra 2: al-Baqara · verse 144

This commentary was written by Claude (Anthropic); it carries no religious authority and should be checked against the classical sources.

2/144

2/144 — "We see your face turning about towards the sky"

"We see your face turning about towards the sky. We shall surely turn you to a qibla that will please you."

One of the most human details in the sūra. A waiting is described — the request is not put into words, but is read from the movement of a face.

And in granting the request the verse names as its ground the person's own contentment: "a qibla that will please you". In a text where commands are generally given without a ground, this clause is striking.
