2/125 — The Kaʿba: a refuge and a place of return
"And when We made the House a place of return for people, and a place of safety."
مَثَابَة — root th-w-b: to turn, to come back. From the same root comes thawāb (the return that comes back for what one has done). A mathāba is a place to which one returns again and again. The word itself describes not a single visit but a centre returned to over and over.
أَمْن — safety. The root ʾ-m-n; at the third verse we saw that the word īmān comes from this root. The name of the place and the name of the belief are thus from the same root: safety.
And note once again: "for people". Not for a particular community.
